
Job Description
Licensure/Certification Qualifications:
The Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO), in collaboration with the Market Chief Medical Officer, division and section leadership, operational and nursing partners, provides strategic and operational leadership for clinical care delivery across the market. This role encompasses oversight of Advanced Practice Provider (APP) engagement, clinical quality, practice optimization, professional development, and alignment of care models with Essentia Health's mission, vision, and strategic objectives. The ACMO fosters a culture of servant leadership, innovation, and continuous improvement, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and cost-effective patient care across all care settings.
Key Responsibilities
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
- Partner with Market CMO to ensure high-quality, safe, and accessible clinical care across the continuum.
- Partners with operational leaders to develop and implement the overall strategy for APPs, including workforce planning, care model integration, and alignment with organizational goals.
- Identify and pursue opportunities for programmatic growth, innovation, and improved patient outcomes.
- Promote improved patient care and efficiencies through the use of electronic systems, leveraging clinical and operational analytics to inform decision-making.
- Actively participate in market and system leadership meetings, committees, and workgroups, ensuring bi-directional communication between divisions, APP leadership, and Essentia Health leadership teams.
OPERATIONAL & FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY
- Supports operational aspects of APP services, including staffing, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Identify opportunities to reduce overall cost of care and achieve value-based performance targets in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, licensing requirements, and practice standards.
QUALITY, SAFETY & PERFORMANCE
- Monitor and support achievement of clinical quality, safety, and patient experience metrics.
- Investigate and help resolve patient quality, safety, or service concerns as delegated.
- Collaborate with physician and professional services on performance concerns and peer review processes.
- Support the transformation of clinical care to improve efficiency, safety, and quality outcomes.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & ENGAGEMENT
- Partner with leadership team to recruit, hire, retain, and mentor qualified APPs, ensuring professional development, succession planning, and a supportive work environment.
- Foster engagement through survey action planning and retention initiatives.
- Serve as a role model and coach for clinicians, supporting leadership development programs and transitions to practice.
- Encourage and implement innovative care models and emerging technologies to advance care delivery.
EXTERNAL REPRESENTATION & COLLABORATION
- Represent Essentia Health at local, regional, and state levels through professional organizations, advocacy groups, and educational programs.
- Promote the growth of clinical education and research initiatives.
Qualifications REQUIRED:
- Employed advanced practice provider in good standing with Essentia Health.
- Master's or doctoral degree preferred
- Minimum of five years' leadership experience.
- Recognized by peers as an excellent clinician with demonstrated leadership effectiveness.
- Proven ability to navigate and lead within a matrix organization.
- Member of the Medical Staff

The ACMO has the authority to fulfill the above responsibilities across Essentia Health in collaboration with market and system leadership
